Prescription Drug (Part D Benefit) Quality Improvement

[ VIEW IMAGE ]

South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care contracts with the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) to perform Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) activities during three-year cycles, called Statements of Work (SOW). With the new Part D benefit that was implemented in January 2006, QIOs were tasked with improving safety in the delivery of prescription drugs.

CMS supports engaging physicians because improving prescribing begins with modifying physicians' behavior. CMS also supports working with dispensing pharmacists because they detect errors and problems with the medications they dispense, and they interact directly with Medicare beneficiaries. In the 8th SOW contract, SDFMC will be working with Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) to improve prescribing and medication use through Medication Therapy Management Services.

To find out more about the other quality improvement topics for the 8th SOW, click on the links to the left.
