According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer affects one in eight American women and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the U.S. The goal of the CMS National Breast Cancer project is to increase regular breast cancer screening (mammogram screening) in female Medicare beneficiaries. Mammography screening has been shown to save lives by detecting breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. CMS recommends a mammography screening a minimum of every two years for women 40 years of age and older.
