SCIP and Heart Failure



The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is a Patient Safety Project in the 9th SOW focused on improving surgical care by significantly reducing surgical complications. The SCIP goal is to reduce the incidence of surgical complications nationally by 25 percent by the year 2010.

Details on all the required clinical measures can be found at www.qualitynet.org. This would include the latest version of the specifiations manual for the applicable reporting quarter, as well as downloads for the CART data abstraction program.

Topic Measure Measure Description
SCIP/HF Card2 Surgery Patients on a Beta Blocker Prior to Arrival Who Received a Beta Blocker During the Perioperative Period
SCIP/HF Inf1 Prophylactic antibiotic received on time-- within one hour prior to surgical incision (2 hours for vancomycin).
SCIP/NH Inf2 Prophylactic antibiotic selection for surgical patients.
SCIP/HF Inf3 Prophylactic antibiotics discontinued within 24 Hours after surgery end time
SCIP/HF Inf4 Cardiac Surgery Patients With Controlled 6 a.m. Postoperative Serum Glucose.
SCIP/HF Inf6 Surgery Patients with Appropriate Hair Removal.
SCIP/HF VTE1 Surgery Patients with Recommended VTE Prophylaxis Ordered.
SCIP/HF VTE2 Surgery Patients Who Received Appropriate VTE Prophylaxis Within 24 Hours Prior to Surgery to 24 Hours After Surgery.
SCIP/HF HF3 Heart failure patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction without ACEI and ARB contraindications who are prescribed ACEI/ARB at discharge.
SCIP INF-9 Urinary catheter (that was inserted in surgery) removed on Postoperative Day 1 (POD 1) or Postoperative Day 2 (POD 2) with day of surgery being day zero.
SCIP INF-10 Surgery Patients with Perioperative Temperature Management
