Nursing Home Quality Initiative (NHQI)
The Nursing Home Quality Initiative (NHQI) is part of a larger Department of Health and Human Services and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services goal to enhance the quality of health care for all Americans, including those covered by the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The initiative will hold nursing homes accountable for the quality of care they render by providing important health-care information. If you are a healthcare professional working in a long term care setting, you will find a variety of quality improvement resources on this site. Simply choose one of the links at the left to access these online nursing home resources.
Contact Bernadette Nelson, NHQI Project Manager at the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care for additional assistance.
A recent regulatory addition pertaining to the review process is the Benefit Improvement and Protection Act (BIPA). This law permits Medicare beneficiary to request an appeal of non-coverage of service notices issued by hospices, home health agencies and nursing homes. Details on this new law, including sample non-coverage notices and protocols, can be found on the BIPA link.
