SD DOH Issues Flu Advisory
Clinicians in South Dakota should consider swine influenza infection in patients with febrile respiratory illness. Especially if they have traveled to affected areas in the United States, Mexico or elsewhere during the 7 days preceding their illness onset. The situation is changing rapidly as more cases are reported and as more is learned about the virus and its virulence and pathogenicity. The most up to date and most authorative clinical guidance information is posted on the CDC's swine flu website: www.cdc.gov/swineflu/guidance . This site has the most current guidance on: Home care. Antiviral use. Face mask and respirator use. Non-pharmaceutical mitigation. Specimen collection. Biosafety in labs. Infection control. Case definitions. In South Dakota all suspect flu specimens should be collected as a normal seasonal flu specimen, samples being either nasopharyngeal aspirates or swabs, and preferably sent in viral transport M4 media. Throat specimens may be collected, but nasopharyngeal specimens are the preferred specimen. (Requests for viral transport media should be made to 605-773-3183). All respiratory specimens collected with a quick test result of either "negative" or "Influenza A" should be forwarded on to the SD Public Health Laboratory.
For further questions, please contact the Laboratory 605-773-3368.

Subject: CDC Update - Interim CDC Guidance for Nonpharmaceutical Community Mitigation [id: 64867] Date: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 7:10:43 AM Community mitigation strategies may be different for each state or community depending on the numbers of cases and spread of disease. As a result, CDC is issuing mitigation guidance that includes a range of interventions so that public health authorities can identify the most appropriate means to protect their counties, communities, and citizens. CDC is recommending home isolation of ill persons. Persons who develop influenza-like-illness (ILI) (fever with either cough or sore throat) should be strongly encouraged to self-isolate in their home for 7 days after the onset of illness or at least 24 hours after symptoms have resolved, whichever is longer. Persons who experience ILI and wish to seek medical care should contact their health care providers to report illness (by telephone or other remote means) before seeking care at a clinic, physician's office, or hospital. Persons who have difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, or are believed to be severely ill, should seek immediate medical attention. Household contacts of persons with symptoms consistent with swine influenza should:remain home at the earliest sign of illness; minimize contact in the community to the extent possible; designate a single household family member as the ill person's caregiver to minimize interactions with asymptomatic persons.
